Introduction
Since the early 1900s, toga movies have been produced. From the Cabiria (1914), a silent and colorless movie, to the newest Ben-Her (2016), the toga genre has grown and changed. And while some were more popular and well-made than others, they all have paved the way for a more modern toga movie. Gladiator (2000) is one example of this. From the plot, full of subtle references to religion and romance and extremely well-written characters, to the costumes of the most important characters (like Maximus, Commudus, and Lucilla) that symbolize and help sum up each characters’ role, to the music, expressing the emotion of each scene. This movie is a shining example of how a toga movie should be made and so should be considered one of, if not the best, toga movies of all time.
